463. Import car to India without paying customs duties . . .
Questions: Hello,
I am an PIO holder, but I am not Indian. I am Czech citizen and because I got married in India I got PIO here. Anyway my
question is can I import car from my country (Czech Republic) to India? Will be left hand drive and also I heard from so many
people that as I am not Indian citizen they will not charge custom duty on this car. Is it true, If yes or no please tell me what
will be the procedure.
Thank you
Best Regards
Lenny Schutz
Answer: What you have heard from many people is not correct. No car can be imported into India without payment of
customs duties unless of course the car being imported is by foreign embassies and consulates.
Furthermore, Left-hand drive automobiles are prohibited from entering the country, the only exception perhaps being cars
imported by foreign consulates.
Customs duties payable in India on imported cars can be reduced if the car is imported under transfer of residency rules.
However, there is no way for an individual to import a car into India without paying the applicable customs duty.
No category of individuals whether Indian or foreigners, are exempt from paying customs duties on cars imported by them.
