Answer: Sponsorship to settle in UK of relatives such as nieces and nephews is not easy. Those settled in UK already and
living there legally can sponsor close family members such as:
•
A spouse, fiancé or fiancée
•
Children up to 18 years of age
•
Parents/Grandparents who are over 65 years of age
The person sponsoring also must have the resources to guarantee that such people will not become a burden on taxpayers.
As far as getting citizenship in UK is concerned, after living in the United Kingdom legally for five years you can apply for
naturalization as a British citizen.
I would like to impress upon you that you should NOT take any steps such as disposing off your property in India or leaving
your employment etc. before you are SURE that you are getting a visa to go to UK and will be allowed to work there as you
plan to do to support your family.
Don’t simply act on your wife’s aunt’s desire to sponsor you all but make plans once sponsorship is approved by the
authorities.
