528. How to apply for Indian Passport if you do not have a birth certificate . . .
Questions: Dear Sir
Do you guide or help in getting India Passport.
One of my relatives in Mumbai, having trouble with the documents required for the Passport such as Proof of age, like Birth
Certificate etc.
Is there a way such as Court Affidavit to replace the missing documents? I will appreciate your reply.

Answer: Birth certificate is a compulsory requirement for passport applicants in India now. However, many people do not
have birth certificates as they were not issued or required when they were born many years ago.
Whether an applicant for Indian passport can present documents other than a birth certificate depends on when the
applicant was born.
1.
If a person born on or after January 26, 1989 does not have a birth certificate, she/he can approach the concerned
municipal offices to get it. Those born after January 26, 1989 cannot use other documents. They must provide birth
certificate.
2.
Those who were born before January 26, 1989 can provide other documents if they do not have a valid birth
certificate. See below:
Indian passport applicants born before January 26, 1989 who do not have birth certificate
For those applicants who were born before January 1, 1989, if they do not have a birth certificate, they can submit:
•
A school certificate from a recognized school showing their date of birth etc.
or
•
In case where applicant did not go to school or went to school for less than 5th class, they can submit a notarized
affidavit indicating their place and date of birth. A sample of such an affidavit, called Annexure "A" can be viewed by
