Q599. How to prove Indian origin for OCI | Do not have parents old passport

Question: Hello

I want to apply for an OCI but do not have the original Indian passports of my parents although they were born in India. What I do have

is an Indian passport of my brother who was also born in India.

Can I apply for an OCI or a PIO on the basis of my brothers Indian passport?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Shulbha Shah

Answer: While I cannot answer on behalf of the government authorities as to whether your application for OCI or PIO would get approval based on providing proof of your brothers Indian passport. I think that qualifying for a PIO card may be slightly easier than OCI. However the decision would be that of the Consular officials when they see your application. Original passports of parents are not the only criteria that will prove your Indian origin. The other option of providing proof of Indian origin is by way of a Nativity Certificate. For more information on Nativity Certificate, there is an article on this website titled ‘Proof of Indian Origin when proper documents not available’ the link for the article is: http://nriinformation.com/articles/
