Q.1250 Avoid paying higher NRI fee in colleges by NRI student
Question: Dear Sir,
My daughter now studying +2 in GULF. She and my family all Indian passport holders.
Next year she will move to India to get college admission.
I want to get admission like Indian student. I don't want to pay under NRI fee structure.
Is it possible ?
Could you please provide the clear rule. It will be very useful for us to plan out.
Thanks & Regards,
Answer: If guess your inquiry is on how to get college admission for your daughter in India, avoiding NRI quota and
seeking admission to an Indian college under the resident admission quota so as to avoid paying a higher tuition fee
charged from non-residents
Actually there is no clear rule on admission to colleges in India for NRIs or NRI quota for many colleges. There is no
law that I am aware of that requires colleges to have an NRI quota. Non-residents try and use the NRI quota if
available to get admission in colleges and for colleges NRI admissions gets them a higher fee. Lately many states are
giving preference to students who have done schooling in the same state where the college is located.
Colleges may have a different tuition fee structure for various categories of students such as:
1.
Those who are residents of the state where the college is located. Generally the tuition fee for students in this
category is the lowest.
2.
Those who are residents of India but not of the state where the college is located. Out of state students may
have to pay a higher tuition fee.
3.
Non-residents and foreigners. Needless to say NRI and foreign students would pay the highest level of fees.
You will have to approach the college you are interested in getting admission and get accurate information on their
fee structure.
Since your daughter has an Indian passport, some colleges may not charge the higher NRI tuition fee but this would
depend on factors such as how long she has been out of India and where she did her schooling from and the state in
India where she resides in.
