Q.1256 CGHS Medical Coverage in India for US Citizen visiting India
Question: Dear Sir,
I am a GOI pensioner and recently acquired U.S. citizenship. My question is: Will I continue to receive Medical facilities
under CGHS during my visit to India. I know CGHS coverage cannot be provided while outside India. But when I am on
visit to India, can I received CGHS facilities.
I shall highly appreciate your views on this please.
Answer: CGHS coverage is definitely not available outside India and whether a CGHS card holder after becoming a
foreign citizen can continue to avail medical benefit in India is a question you should ask the program administrators.
I doubt if the government visualized a scenario where a pensioner who acquires foreign citizenship and relinquishes
their Indian citizen would travel to India to avail medical services under Central Government Health Scheme [CGHS].
When seeking reimbursement under CGHS their claim form asks for full address of card holder. I doubt if a foreign
address is shown that benefits would be allowed. However, do confirm with the authorities so you know beforehand
where you stand.
