46. Take Motor Bike to India on Transfer of Residency

Question: Sir, I purchased a Harley Davidson Bike – Softail Heritage Classic – 1584CC during June 2008 and wish to take it to India by end of this year. The Bike is in Qatar where I am employed and will be taking it on TR. Please advise the rate of Customs I will have to pay and also advise if you know some clearing agent at the JNPT – Mumbai for the customs clearance. Best regards and have a nice day. Raphy Joseph Answer: Transfer of residency is allowed only after a stay of at least two years abroad. So make sure you meet the residency requirements. Unless rules have changed the duty is around 120%. I am unable to recommend any customs clearance agent in Mumbai. Customs brokers all over the world have affiliates who handle their work at different ports. Check the advertisements for customs brokers and shop around for someone you are comfortable with. There is also the option of having friends or family members in Mumbai contact a local broker on your behalf.
