transfer of residency

Q: Dear Mr. Chand, My name is Subha Rao, working in Dubai for Mitsubishi Motors dealer from last 11 years, I bought one Lancer, 1500CC, 1999 MODEL, Automatic Transmission from Dubai. I wish to import to India, somebody said we cant import 1999 model cars in India, please advice me, can i import it under TR rules, and how much I have to pay as customs duty (or penalty). Thanks in Advance Waiting for your response. S.Rao A. There is no penalty for import of car to India if you are doing this under transfer of residency. Actually car can only be imported if you are transferring residence into India. I believe the rule as per Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 where in cars older than three years old cannot be imported to India does not apply in cases of Transfer of Residency. You should check with a customs broker to get you the exact customs duty breakdown.
