164. How to get death certificate in India
Q: Dear Sir,
This is Manimaran(Indian) from Singapore, the information which you provide in the NRI Information Website are really great and very useful to
the Indian those stay in aboard thank you very much for your great effort. Also i need your great help regarding Death Certificate.
My father was passed away in1997 but we didn't register the death, now I need that certificate to apply passport for my mother Please provide
me the information & procedure to get the death certificate from Singapore or in India.

A. While it is compulsory by Indian law to register death of a person within 21 days of its occurrence, there are provisions for late
registration by paying the prescribed fee and seeking permission of the Registrar in the area where the death occurred. A lawyer
or one of your relatives living in India should be able to handle this for you by filling the required forms.
Registering the death is important as it relives the family from social, legal and official obligations and helps to proceed in a legal
manner with property inheritance, collect insurance claims etc.
