239. Indian pension after acquiring foreign citizenship
Q: Dear V.K. Chand,
I am a retired person drawing pension from Tamil Nadu Government. As I am a Canadian permanent resident living in Canada for the past 4 years,
I used to send Life Certificate every year from the Indian Embassy in Canada to the bank in Chennai where my pension is deposited, as it is a
mandatory condition for availing pension.
I am interested in applying for Canadian citizenship as well as OCI. In that case, I would like to know, to what extent my pension would be
affected by becoming a Canadian citizen and an OCI and from whom I would have to get the life certificate to send to the bank every year.
Thank you for your advice
JJ
A. Taking Canadian citizenship should not have any affect on your Indian pension. Even after taking Canadian citizenship you
would be able to get the required certificate from Indian embassy in Canada.
When you get your Canadian citizenship just make sure you follow the passport surrender rules and get renunciation of Indian
citizenship certificate in a timely manner. This will be required to get any consular service at Indian consulates.
