245. How to get endorsement of new passport number in PIO card

Q: My daughter is a PIO card holder and PIO card is valid until 2024. The old passport has expired and we have got a new passport. Could you please tell us how to endorse the new passport in the PIO card. We need to travel soon and would appreciate your guidance. Many thanks, Dr Vijayalakshmi A. It is not mandatory to get the new passport endorsed. In such cases the holder of the PIO card should carry their old and new passport when they travel to India. To get endorsement of new passport number in PIO cards, the procedure to be followed depends on the Indian consulate that applies to your area of residence abroad. Some consulates accept direct applications where as others have outsourced this type of work. To apply to consulates that have NOT outsourced this type of work the requirement basically is to submit: A letter mentioning that you want to get endorsed the new passport number in the PIO card. Original and New passport along with photo copies of both. PIO Card: Original with copy Fee would depend on the consulate where you apply. Cost is currently $20 and in the United States the outsourcing company charges an additional 12$ for their service. Applications can be made in person or sent in by mail. Time frame normally is same day or next day for applications made in person and about three weeks for mail applications. Mail applicants will also have to send mailing cost of approximately $20.
