257. Employment Visa for India - Need to surrender old Indian passport

Q: Hi, I'm planning to travel to India this summer to volunteer with an NGO. I realize I need an employment visa. I acquired my UK passport long before May 2010. Do I need to surrender my very long ago expired Indian passport? I have not traveled on it since it expired. I currently live in the US. But I am not a permanent resident yet. Thank you for your help, JA A. Indian Consulate where you apply for an employment visa will normally ask to see either your canceled passport or surrender certificate before providing visa services. In your case, if you have "Canceled" stamp on your Indian passport, then there is a no requirement of acquiring "Surrender Certificate". If you do not have a canceled stamp on your last Indian passport, then you will have to get the "Surrender Certificate". The fee would be US$ 20.
