317. US Citizen can continue to hold Agricultural Land in India

Q: Hi My friend purchased Agriculture land in India in the year 2000 and he became US citizen in the year 2008 and took OCI card. Can he hold that agriculture Land in his name. thanks Sridhar Rao A. Yes, your friend can continue to hold the agricultural land in his name. Any agricultural land in India that was owned prior to becoming a non-resident/foreign citizen can be held. If and when your friend wishes to sell the agricultural land he owns, he must sell it only to a Indian citizen who is living in India. That is he cannot sell to another non-resident.
