Questions: I know I have to renounce my US citizenship to contest Indian elections. My question is, if I renounce US citizenship, will I get Indian citizenship right away or what is the process and length of time to get the Indian citizenship. Answer: There is no requirement to renounce US citizenship when applying for Indian citizenship. An undertaking has to be given by the applicant that if the application for grant of Indian citizenship is approved, they would renounce their foreign citizenship. Once application is approved, applicants is required to furnish a renunciation of foreign citizenship certificate and then a certificate of Indian citizenship is issued.
