Q712. What is the significance of green card . . .

Question: Sir, What is the significance of green card ? Do you still need valid visa and Passport even if you are a green card

holder ?

Regards

Answer: A green card is proof of being a lawful permanent resident of the United States of America. If a person holds a green card in USA, then obviously such a person is NOT a US citizen and they should have a passport of their home country. While green card holders may use their green cards as proof of their lawful residential status in the United States, the will certainly need a passport to travel to and be able to enter other countries. They may also need a visa depending on the passport they hold and visa requirements of the country, they are traveling to. Green card holder’s cannot legally travel to other countries solely based on their Green card. A passport would certainly be required. To clarify: A green card is not a valid proof of citizenship. It only grants the holder the ability to stay legally in the United States. Green card holder’s do not have right to travel to most other countries as a citizen of the U.S. Passport and Visa may be required. o The only exception that I am aware of currently is that green card holder’s can cross into Canada/Mexico by showing their green cards and may not be required to present a passport. To re-enter USA you will need your green card. Check travel document requirements with concerned consulates before making travel plans. Rules can change at anytime. Its always wise to carry your passport.
