Q723. What changes if Indian citizen acquires Swedish citizenship . . .

Question: Hello Sir, My Name is Neeraj Shandilya. I am a NRI, I am still a Indian citizen. However I got a permanent residence for Sweden and now I have chances to apply for Swedish citizenship. My question is if I leave Indian citizenship, what does that means for my property in India. For example what will happen to my property I own any land / flat / villa / inherited property etc, would I have still ownership of all these ? What is the legal aspect in this case ? Waiting for your answer Sir. Thanks in Advance Answer: If you go ahead and change your citizenship: Since India does not allow its citizens to hold dual nationalities, you would have to renounce Indian citizenship and will no longer be able to carry your Indian passport which will be cancelled on renunciation of Indian citizenship. You would need a visa to visit India (Any type of Indian visa, or PIO/OCI) Any property that you already own in India would not be affected and you would continue to own such property. Once you take Swedish citizenship, you status in India would be that of a ‘Person of Indian Origin’ (PIO). As per rules of RBI, when it comes to selling property located in India, PIOs can sell their property only to: o A person resident in India or o An NRI or o A PIO with prior approval of the Reserve Bank of India
