Q.926 OCI Visa on new passport before traveling to India
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Australian citizen and OCI holder, my son (6 years) is also Australian citizen and OCI holder. We wish to travel to
India in November 2016.
My son's passport was expired and we applied for new passport.
Regarding the OCI label on new passport, the website (http://nriinformation.com/articles4/new_oci_visa.htm)
suggests that the OCI label on new passport is not required any more and we can travel with new Australian passport
(Without OCI label) along with the OCI booklet.
Please can you confirm if this is correct?
Regards,
Parminder Kehal
Sydney- Australia
Answer: While the government has done away with the requirement of transfer of OCI visa to new passports and
allowed OCI holders traveling to India to do so with their OCI booklets, they have not changed the requirement that
makes it necessary for some applicants to apply for and get fresh OCI documents when their passport expires and
they get a new passport. See below:
OCI Travel Advisory – Re-issue of OCI Card (On getting a New Passport)
For an applicant who is 20 years of age or younger, OCI documents must be re-issued each time a new passport is
issued.
For an applicant who is 50 years of age or older, OCI documents must be re-issued once after the issuance of a
new passport. If the OCI card is issued for the first time after the age of 50 years, then there is no need for re-
issuance of OCI.
For an applicant who is 21 to 49 years of age, there is no need to re-issue OCI documents each time a new
passport is issued. However, if the applicant desires, he/she can request that the OCI documents be re-issued so
that the OCI documents reflect the correct passport number.
Since your son is six years old, he needs to apply for re-issue of OCI documents. The fee for this is currently US $25
or equivalent in local currency.
