Q.982 Reissue of OCI for 4 year old child with new passport
Question: Hi
My 4 year son has an OCI card but his passport is expiring and has been renewed with a new picture due to change in personal
appearance. Is it mandatory for him to update or get a reissue of his OCI card which has the old passport number and old picture of
him.?
Can he still travel to India with his current OCI card as long as he carries his old passport with him?
The problem I have is that I dont have enough time to wait 6-8 weeks for the reissue as we need to travel urgently.
What are my options?
Regards
Ravinder
Answer: As per the Bureau of Immigration - Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India, passengers who are carrying old
canceled passports having Life Long Indian “U” Visa Sticker affixed on it along with new passport are allowed entry into India.
[Kindly note it is now mandatory to have your OCI booklet when you travel to India]
So will your son have any problems traveling to India? perhaps not, but I cannot guarantee this. Since I do not represent the
government I am not in a position to tell you whether your son can travel to India other than state
what the rules are and let you make the decision. To be sure that you will not have any problems
you need to contact the Indian Consulate as they and only they speak for the Government of India.
For the benefit of our visitors to this page, I am posting again the rules regarding re-issue of OCI.
Rules regarding Re-issue of OCI when a New Passport is acquired by an OCI
holder:
In the following situations Re-issue is required:
For an applicant who is 20 years of age or younger, OCI documents must be re-issued each time a new passport is issued.
For an applicant who is 21 to 49 years of age, there is no need to re-issue OCI documents each time a new passport is issued.
[If they want to do so for they can, but its not compulsory]
For an applicant who is 50 years of age or older, OCI documents must be re-issued once after the issuance of a new passport.
However: If the OCI card is issued for the first time after the age of 50 years, then there is no need for re-issuance of OCI.
