I assume by the words RP in your email, you refer to a Resident Permit. A Resident Permit in India is issued by the FRRO, which takes us to the question, who can get a Resident Permit and how? Foreigners who enter India with an employment visa or plan to stay longer than six months on a business or tourist visa are required to get themselves registered at a Foreigners Regional Registration Office within 14 days of their arrival in India. When they register, they are issued a residence permit. The validity of the residence permit is the same as the visa validity used to enter India. Think of the residence permit as proof of having duly registered at FRRO. When a person who has registered at FRRO leaves India, they are required to show their residence permit at immigration. Those who do not need to register at FRRO generally due to their short stay or other exemptions, do not require to present a resident permit at the time of departure from India PROVIDED THEY HAVE NOT OVERSTAYED THEIR VISA VALIDITY. If a person stays in India beyond their visa validity and they did not get an extension of their visa, then they need an exit visa from the FRRO. At point of departure from India, the immigration officer will know by looking at the passenger’s passport entry/exit dates whether FRRO registration was required. Immigration would want to ensure that entry into India was legal and exit is within the authorized visa validity. Not sure which countries passport you hold as you have not mentioned the country you came from. The type of visa and the country of citizenship are checked for visa extensions etc. To clarify your situation you would have to speak to FRRO or speak to a lawyer for help.
