Q.1107 Linking bank account with AADHAAR by NRI ( Indian origin)
living in Melbourne (Aus)
Question: My son born, educated in Bangalore is having SB A/c in a nationalised bank in Bangalore and is operative even
now with sufficient balance.
He obtained Australian citizenship and currently living in Melbourne.
Please inform as to how he can obtain Adhaar card for linking his
bank account in India?
Is there any exemption for such NRI?
What are the guidelines issued in this regard by RBI or any others
concerned?
Answer: As your son is living in Melbourne he is a non-resident of
India and hence not eligible for Aadhaar card. As per rules
announced by the government of India, all domestic bank account
holders in India must link their Aadhaar card to their bank accounts.
NRIs are not supposed to hold domestic bank accounts. If your son
has a domestic (resident) bank account in India then he should get
the account designated as NRO account by contacting his bank. NRO
accounts held by NRIs are exempt from linking of Aadhaar as they are
not eligible to get Aadhaar.
Services for which NRIs are exempt from providing
Aadhaar card.
NRIs are exempt from providing Aadhaar for many services in India
where providing Aadhaar is mandatory for residents. Services such
as:
•
Opening of a bank account in India by NRI
•
Sim Card application in India
•
Getting service pension
•
Registration of property
If a person is not eligible for Aadhaar they cannot be expected to provide one and hence are exempt. For more
information please see question number 1106 titled NRI bank account linking to Aadhaar card
