Q.1108 OCI - Aadhaar - PAN Query - Tax on Rental income in India
Question: Dear Sir,
Your website is very informative. Thank you for your efforts in answering questions of millions of NRIs.
I was wondering if you could help me with a question that I am trying to get answered.
I recently became an OCI holder. I have two properties in India from the time I used to be in several years back India. One
property is vacant and the other is recently rented out.
My question is, since I will have to now pay tax for the rental income, will I be required to apply for Aadhar card? I already
have a PAN card.
Please suggest.
Regards,
Answer: Whether you need an Aadhaar or not depends on your residential status in India.
If you are a resident of India then you can apply for Aadhaar, if you are non-resident you are not eligible to apply.
Aadhaar is for residents of India, regardless of citizenship. If you reside abroad, then you are not eligible of Aadhaar. Those
who are not eligible for Aadhaar are exempt from the mandatory requirement to provide Aadhaar numbers.
PAN will be required and you state you already have this. NRIs can file taxes with PAN and Aadhaar is not mandatory for
them.
