Q.1199 OCI Holder query on renewal of OCI . . .
Question: Hi there,
Can you please help me with query I have:
My mother is an an OCI holder over the age of 50. Since applying for the OCI she has renewed her passport so when
she travelled from the UK to India she usually takes her current and previous passport and her OCI documentation.
I have seen online that after the age of 50 there is a new rule which states all OCI holders must reapply, but I have also
been told by visa agencies that this is not necessary. Can you please help and confirm which is correct?
I am due to travel to India in mid-January 2019 and do not want to have any problems when landing.
Many thanks for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Answer: Whether you mother needs to apply for fresh OCI documents on acquiring a new passport depends on when
she initially got her OCI. To clarify, the age when she first got registered as an Overseas Citizen of India [OCI]
There are two scenarios:
1.
If she got OCI status before she was 50 years old, then she would indeed have to apply fresh OCI documents after
she turns 50 years of age and gets a new passport.
2.
On the other hand if she got her OCI when she was already 50 years old or more, then there is no requirement to
get fresh documents. The OCI booklet and current valid passport is all that may be required to visit India.
