Q.1228 Got OCI at age 16 - new passport at age 21 must OCI be renewed?
Question: Hi,
My son got his OCI documents when he was about 16, he is now 21 and also has a new UK passport. I understand there
used to be a requirement to renew his OCI Uvisa whenever passport was renewed or after the age of 21.
Is this still the case as the Indian high commission website is very vague on this and says it's not necessary but also says it is
necessary, if you could clarify for me I would be very grateful.
Thanks very much
Answer: OCI renewal criteria has not changed, the only change that came into place was that there is no requirement to
carry your old passport with OCI stamp. The OCI booklet is now acceptable proof of OCI status when visiting India.
Current OCI rules indicate that renewal is required ‘each time a new passport is issued up to the completion of 20 years of
age and once after completion of 50 years of age in view of biological changes in face of the applicant.’
My interpretation would be that your son since he has completed age 20, he should renew his OCI once and then again after
he reaches age 50.
