Q686. Assistance in India for Non Resident Indians (NRIs)

Question: Sir, We and our children are Naturalized citizens of USA. I and my wife hold OCI cards but not our Daughter (40 and Son (37). We have a House and Two House sites in India. I expect eventually our children would inherit these properties. Are there any reliable outfits in India - preferably Hyderabad, Bangalore or Chennai - who can help our children ( for a Fee of course) to liquidate these properties and transfer the proceeds in $$ to USA. It is indeed noble on your part to offer such help to people like us. I will be glad to pay you any fees for your service Sir! Thanks & Regards Answer: There are indeed many outfits that offer such services but whether they are or shall I say will be reliable is another question. The only person I can vouch for is myself, but I just don’t have the time currently to handle such transactions. My suggestion to you would be to take some time off and personally visit India for three to six months. This will give you a chance to get appropriate advice and help to dispose off your properties at fair market value. If transactions are done legally, there will be no issue or problems in transferring sale proceeds of property to USA. Lawyers and Accountants in India are not regulated in the same manner as they are in USA. So the need to be more careful when selecting a lawyer in India is very important. Selecting professional help based on impressive websites and posted reviews can often lead to trouble. You mention in your email that you have a house and two house sites! which I assume is vacant land. Make sure you have some type of protection against encroachment of land.
