Q694. Acceptable proof of address to register car in India by NRI . . .

Question: I am an NRI from Australia with a valid OCI card intending to purchase a new small car with my part payment and a small loan in Koci, Kerala. I have a copy of my title of the property, tax receipt and Pan card. Is this enough evidence for proof of address. You assistance in this matter is very much appreciated. Thanks Melbourne, Australia Answer: Pan cards in India show only the individuals Name, Father’s name and the Pan card holder’s date of birth. Residential address is not shown on Pan cards, hence they cannot be used as proof of address. The acceptable type of documents showing proof of address are normally: Ration card - As a non-resident you will not have Passport - As OCI holder you will have a foreign passport Land line telephone bill - You may or may not have this as most people use only mobile phones these days. Your best bet under these circumstances is to use a utility bill such as your properties electricity bill. This should show your name and address and electricity bills are acceptable as proof of address as long as they are current bills. Photo copy the latest bill for this purpose. Since you intend to buy a new car, let your car dealer earn his money! let them handle the paper work for you. I bought a car a few years ago and the Maruti dealer handled everything up to the point of delivering the car at our home with the paperwork.
