Security should be of concern to returning NRIs

If you are a NRI in USA, Canada, UK or Australia and are considering returning to India, make sure you take security in India as one of the factors into consideration before deciding to make a move to India. Today, India has a lot of problems as far as security is concerned. Local Indians find it difficult to live in peace and day to day life for many people continues with a threat of security in their minds. While women are very much in the news these days due to the vast media coverage of the innocent rape victim in Delhi, just about everyone is vulnerable these days. Senior citizens are also not safe, despite some local police stations having adopted schemes where by they check on seniors living alone from time to time. All this looks good on paper but what is actually being done to protect and ensure seniors and women do not face harassment are two different things. If you plan to return to India, make sure you pick a city where you can not worry about day to day safety. From what I can gather from recent news reports, even the police in India refuse or try and dissuade people from filing a police report (FIR). These days every goon knows some big official or politician and flaunt laws at will. I was planning on return, now even my loved ones in India tell me its not the thing to do. When people return to India, they need a good peaceful place to live, good schools and medical facility. All these can be found with some effort, but you can’t fight the law makers and officials when they start ignoring the common man to accommodate the big wigs and have a goal of just making money! Just my two cents! Sudhir Chopra New York (27 years now)
