387. Higher school fee for foreign born children . . .

Question: Hi Chand, Greetings.. I am expecting a baby in June 2012. Currently I am in US. I am very much confused whether to stay in US or go back to India for delivery. We came to US last year as my husband is having some onsite assignment for 2 or 3 years. We will be back to India after that. Now the problem is, some people suggest that if the baby is born in US, he can obtain US citizenship and then apply for PIO card. But all the education will be mostly done in India. Hopefully, for higher education like MS or something.. he need to come to US. My doubt here is, will we be charged NRI fees(additional fees than ordinary fees) for education in India? If so, that is very difficult task for us. Please clarify me in this aspect ASAP so that, I can decide whether to travel India or stay in US. Thanks in Advance, Prathyusha. Answer: I don't quite understand why you would decide to go to India to give birth. If this is to ensure that your new born child will get Indian Citizenship, you could get an Indian passport for the baby in USA also, from the Indian consulate near your area of residence. You should go to page number 85 of the question/answer pages and check out a question titled 'Advantages of giving birth in India or United States' you may find it informative. As for your question regarding higher fee for foreign born children, there is no hard and fast rule for higher fees. This entirely depends on the school you choose and their policies.
