437. UK Passport holder living in India cannot get International Drivers License in
India
Questions: Dear Sir,
I have a question. I am a British Passport holder and recently have got an OCI card. I've been living in India for about 35 years and am
married and have two teenage boys.
I have an Indian driving license and have been driving comfortably for many years. I am recently visiting France and was told that i
cannot drive there since i need an IDP.
Problem is IDP is only issued to Indian citizens which means only my husband can drive outside of India with his Indian passport and
IDP.
What is the best possible option for me to drive abroad?
Many thanks,
Bindu Agarwal
Answer: As you mention, The motor licensing authority issues International Driving License’s to the citizens of India. However, from
the information that I have, France is one of the countries that does NOT require a IDP.
France does not require tourists to have a International driving permit. An IDP is also not a requirement to rent cars in France. Tourists
visiting France for a short duration can drive with a valid drivers license from their home country. They should carry a translation of
their driver license in the French language or have an international license.
Check with the French consulate, you may be able to drive in France!
