Q738. Fresh OCI documents still required for some current OCI holders
Question: Hi
My name is wazir singh and my son is 5.5 years old. I made his new passport because the last one is expired. I have his
cancelled passport with U visa sticker and also his oci card. We are able to show his both passports and oci card during his
travel to India. We are at the moment in India.
My enquiry is that 'Do we need U visa sticker on his new passport for exit to india?'
Please reply me back thanks.
Wazir singh
Answer: The requirement of transferring OCI visa to a new passport has been removed by the Govt of India as of January
29, 2015. Visit NRI Information home page to view the link to the recent changes in OCI - PIO by the Govt of India in
2015.
According to the circular the govt has directed immigration authorities not to insist on production of the foreign passport
containing the “U” visa sticker from OCI holders while they enter/exit India and immigration clearance be granted based
on production of the OCI card only. To view the document click HERE
While it is no longer a requirement to transfer OCI visa from old passport to new passport. When it comes to fresh OCI
documents the rule is still on the books that states:
‘OCI registration certificate and visa have got to be re-issued each time a new passport is issued up to the
completion of 20 years of age and once after completion of 50 years of age.’
Hence, I assume that those OCI holders who get a new passport up to the completion of 20 years of age as well as those
who reach age 50 and change passports will have to get new OCI booklets with updated photographs etc. The Indian
Consulate or FRRO can provide further information and latest applicable rules in this regard.
