Question: How can I open an account with a oci card in Internet banking? In India Answer: To get internet banking you first need to open a non-resident bank account in India. Once your account is setup you can ask for activation of internet banking and bank will send you login credentials by mail to your address. You don’t state whether you are in India or abroad. In case you are visiting India you can approach any bank of your choice that offers NRI bank accounts and open an account by showing your foreign passport and OCI card. Bank will provide you with forms to fill for account opening. NRI account can also be opened if you are abroad. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

General procedure to open NRI accounts in India from abroad

1. Download account opening Form from Bank website. Banks may even provide online form filling for account opening which eliminates a paper form. 2. Documents to be submitted for proof of identity and proof of being a NRI or a Person of Indian origin. The Passport & NRI Status Proof submitted for opening the NRI Account should have a minimum validity of 6 months from the Date of Application. 3. Proof of address. Acceptable documents list should be shown on the banks website. 4. Documents need to be attested by Indian Consulate. Some banks may accept foreign notarized documents 5. Know your customer (KYC) Form may also be required by banks to find the applicants residency status and foreign tax identity numbers. For KYC purposes documents must be provided within 12 months or banks will freeze your account. Banks in India such as Federal Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Bank all provide NRI accounts. Check their websites for links to online account opening. In case you open an account with an Indian Bank that already has presence in your country of residence, this may make things a lot easier.
