Q.1303 Senior citizen with green card - transfer money to USA
Question: Hello,
My mother ( 75 yrs) is a US green card holder since 2018. I brought her to the US soon after the sudden demise of my
father in 2016. She has regular bank accounts in India. Is it possible to wire the money to the US and deposit into her US
bank account or it cannot be done without converting to a NRO account
Thanks.
Answer: It would have been easier for your mother to transfer funds from her domestic bank accounts to you before
she became a non-resident. As a green card holder she needs to notify her bank in India of her non-resident status and
get her domestic accounts changed to non-resident [NRO] bank account.
To transfer money from her NRO account she would need to go through the repatriation procedure which will require a
certificate from a chartered accountant that any taxes due have been paid. It’s best to seek the services of a CA in India
for help. Her Indian bank may also be able to offer advice on how to move forward to transfer the funds to USA.
