156. Passport Surrender - Renunciation Fee

Q: Dear Sir/Mam I have a question why there is such a huge increase in fees for the cancellation of Indian passport and getting a surrender certificate. Regards Reena Verma A. I am sure most NRIs share your concern! and that includes myself. Incidentally, Nri Information is a private website that I started in 2006 following my retirement and this website is in no way associated with the Government of India. I am based in North America and pay the same fees as other NRIs. Passport surrender fee has definitely taken a majority of NRIs by surprise and the current $175 can really add up when it comes to families of four or five people acquiring foreign citizenship. The government has made some concessions though for NRIs who acquired foreign citizenship before May 31, 2010 as they have to pay only $20.
