367. Birth registration of foreign born child in India
Q: Dear Mr Chand,
I would like to inform you that i'm a NRI working in Ivory Coast (West Africa) With a Residence and Work permit over here, we(me & my
wife)are Indian passport holder, My daughter has born in 14th Nov 2007 and we have got register her birth in indian Consular in Ivory Coast,
and obtained her Indian Passport.
Now my question is, is it necessary to do the Registration of Birth again in india local (Municiplity) or not, because shortly we will be settle
down in kolkata, some school is asking to have Municipality Birth Registration Certificates, in this case can i produce her indian Passport
issued in Ivory Coast will be valid or not.
Thanks Regards
Somnath C.
A. It should not be necessary to register birth again in India. Birth registration done at the Indian consulate in Ivory Coast
should be valid all over India. Theoretically, Indian consulates when registering births etc. are representing all municipal
offices in India and offer such services as a convenience to their citizens abroad.
When you submitted your daughters birth registration form and applicable fee to the Indian consulate in Ivory Coast, you
must have received some form of documentation as evidence of birth registration. This document, along with your daughters
Indian passport should be acceptable by schools.
