Q.962 OCI Booklet Renewal - Travel to India if time not enough to renew
Question: Hi,
I am travelling to India from Glasgow (UK) on 14-Dec-2016.
Both my kids have new UK passports (as previous ones had expired) but their U Visa stamp is still on the old UK
passport. The OCI booklet has reference to the old UK Passport number.
I approached VFS (OCI Miscellaneous services ) looking to get a new OCI booklet as I understand Govt. of India no
longer needs to transfer the U Visa stamp from old UK passport to new UK Passport. However there is a minimum 6 to
8 week timeline before that can happen, and I have at best 4 weeks, and no more.
My question is, can I travel using old UK Passport / OCI booklet (with old UK passport number / and New UK passport
? or do I compulsorily need a new OCI booklet.
Alternatively, can my kids travel on a tourist visa ( takes only a week to issue) and the parents can travel on OCI ?
Any help will be appreciated, as I have already booked tickets and we are going for a religious function and would
hate to see ticket money go to waste , but more importantly my kids would be very disappointed at not being able to
go.
Regards,
Yezdi
Answer: The Government of India is allowing PIO cardholders who have applied for OCI and not yet received their
OCI documents to travel to India with their valid foreign passport, valid PIO card and acknowledgement slip of their
OCI application.
Perhaps you could contact the Indian consulate in your jurisdiction and check if you can do the same. This way simply
apply for your kids OCI renewal and use the acknowledgement slip for travel.
After speaking with the Indian Consulate you should be able to follow the best method to proceed. I do hope you are
aware of the currency demonetization [ Rupees 500 & 1000 currency no longer legal tender in India ] and cash
withdrawal limits that have suddenly effected many Indians as well as foreigners visiting India. The situation is
expected to gradually improve but do keep an eye on the situation.

The PIO cardholders can travel to India with their valid foreign passport, valid PIO card and
Acknowledgement Slip of their OCI card in lieu of PIO card application, as a proof of having applied for an
OCI Registration document in lieu of PIO card. [ http://www.cgitoronto.ca/content/pio-0 ]
