Q.963 Apply for Australian passport & OCI for child born in India

Question: sir, I am an Indian Citizen and My wife is an Australian Citizen . Now we are in India and having a new born baby of 8 months, baby born in India and i just applied for Australian Citizenship by Descent for my child. Now i need to apply for Australian Passport and OCI Card for my child . 1. Can i apply for both Australian Passport and OCI Card in same time? 2. Without OCI Card how many days child can stay in India? (My wife holding an OCi card) waiting for your valuable replay Sarang Sarang Answer: You cannot apply for your child’s Australian passport and OCI at the same time. To apply for OCI all applicants must have a valid foreign passport. First you need to apply for your babies Australian passport and then proceed with OCI application. I would assume that you have already registered your babies birth and have a birth certificate for the child. In case you have not still registered the birth, the procedure is briefly described below.

How to get birth certificate when foreigner gives birth in India

Hospital where birth takes place usually give the parents documentary proof of birth and the parents are supposed to contact the appropriate municipal government authority to register the birth and get a birth certificate. Generally the birth of every baby in India must be registered within 21 days of birth with the appropriate authorities. The procedure of birth registration may differ slightly from State to State.

Photocopies and originals of the following documents may be required: Proof of birth letter from the hospital Parents’ passports and visas Parents’ birth certificates Marriage certificate Foreigner’s should also register birth of their babies abroad in their own countries perhaps through their consulates.

Documents that may be required to get exit visa from India Application Form for exit permit Child’s birth certificate Copy of the child’s passport Copy of both parents’ passport and visas Copy of parents’ proof of address Copy of airline tickets Passport-sized photographs You should take your child’s birth certificate and visit the foreigner regional registration office [FRRO] in your area and seek guidance on the procedure of legalizing your child’s stay in India and getting an exit visa for the child to leave India when you get the Australian passport.
