Q.1092 Short visa overstay in India - Penalty for overstaying visa
Question: Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to know, I am more 3 days over stays in Mumbai and how to pay fine and how much? Kindly reply to me
please.
Regards,
Answer: In case of overstay of visa in India the procedure is not as simple as paying a fine. An exit visa is required to leave
India. The authorities will look into the reason as to why the overstay happened and then levy fine or penalty.
The penalty is usually around US $30 or equivalent in Indian Currency for a short duration of overstay if the overstay is
condoned by the authorities.

Foreigners visiting India should avoid overstay of visa
I would like to caution readers of this page not to take visa overstay lightly. Do not assume that foreigners can calmly
ignore their visa duration, stay in India beyond their visa validity and get away by simply paying a fine.
Visa stay by foreigners can lead to prosecution under the Foreigners Act 1946 and penalties such fines, imprisonment as
well as expulsion from India.
Authorities decide on visa overstay penalty on a case by case basis depending on the reason and circumstances that lead
to the visa overstay.
