Birth Registration of new born children at Indian Consulates . . .

Indian citizens, who reside abroad, can register their new born child at Indian consulates in the country where they reside. In such cases, an Indian passport for the child can also be obtained, provided the child has not obtained a passport of the country of birth.

Advantages of registering birth

Indian citizens residing abroad should register their new born children at the nearest Indian consulates. Suppose, Indian parents who are residing in the United States due to employment, give birth to a baby in USA, the child would be a US citizen by birth. If parents register the birth at the Indian consulate, their child will have the option of claiming Indian citizenship when reaching the age of majority. In such a case, parents would also have the option of applying for an Indian passport for their foreign born child. However, if they chose this route, they must not apply for a US passport for their new born.

Documents required for birth registration

Along with the application for birth registration, the following documents are required. 1. A copy of the birth certificate of the child. 2.  A copy of the passport of both the parents. 3. A copy of the certificate of Indian citizenship if acquired by registration/ naturalization. 4. A copy of the marriage certificate of the parents.
