How to get a tax residency certificate
Tax Residency Certificates are normally issued by the tax authorities of the country of which you are a citizen. For example, U.S.
nationals would have to contact the IRS to get such a certificate and UK citizens would approach the HMRC.
Tax residency certificate is a document that basically certifies that a person is a citizen of a country for tax purposes. This certificate
entitles individuals to take advantage of benefits that may be available to them under tax treaties between governments.
To get a residency certificate in the United States, an application is made on Form 8802. The tax residency certificate is issued by the
IRS as Form 6166. This is a letter printed on U.S. Department of Treasury stationery, certifying that the person named in the document is
a resident of the United States, for purposes of the income tax laws of the United States. Currently, the fee for acquiring this
certificate in the United States is US$ 35.
Canadian citizens can get a residency certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by applying to the tax office where they
normally file their tax returns.
UK citizens can get a certificate of UK residence from the HMRC office which normally deals with their tax affairs. This would be where
they normally sent their tax returns.
Australian citizens who require a certificate of residency, can simply send a signed letter or fax to the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
There is a fee charged for this service.
Requests for certificate can be mailed to:
Attn: Certificate of residency/status
Australian Taxation Office
CAS Income Tax and Activity Statement
GPO Box 4991, SYDNEY NSW 2001
Fax to (02) 9374 8999 or (02) 9374 2811.
NRIs can get TDS Refund of TDS deducted on bank interest in India
NRIs, who have income in India that is below the tax free allowance, can claim a refund for the TDS deducted. Most non-residents who
have bank accounts in India would probably qualify for a refund of either a partial or all of the TDS they were charged. However, not
many NRIs bother to claim TDS deducted because to claim a refund, a tax return must be filed.
