Question: Please let me know if I will be eligible to receive a senior-citizen concession on a train ride ( as for example. - from Kolkata to Varanasi ) in India. I am an USA citizen / I am 68- yrs of age / I hold a OCI card. Answer: Effective September 29, 2016 the authorities have withdrawn this benefit from senior citizens who are non- residents of India and foreigners. Senior citizen discount when purchasing railway tickets for train travel in India are now only for Indian citizens. Prior to September 29, 2016 all senior citizens regardless of citizenship could avail Indian railway senior discount of 40% for male senior citizens of age 60 and above. For women aged 58 years and above the discount was 50%. Now the benefit is allowed to only Indian citizens.

Concessions granted to different categories of persons on Indian Railways In addition to senior citizen discounted tickets for train travel within India, there are several other categories who also qualify to avail concessions on Indian railway train tickets. For instance: • Doctors – Allopathic – travelling for any purpose are elligible for a concession of 10% in all classes and in Rajdhani/ Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains. • Foreign students studying in India - travelling to attend camps/seminars organized by Govt. of India and also visit to places of historical & other importance during vacations. May qualify for a concession of 50% in Second and Sleeper class. There are various other category concessions available.
