Restricted Areas in India where tourist visa holders are not allowed

A tourist visa is not sufficient to visit areas that are designated as 'Restricted Areas' by the government of India. Even PIO card holders and those who have OCI cannot visit 'Restricted Areas' without prior authorization. To visit restricted areas, foreigners are required to submit an application for the issue of a Special Permit. This application is made on a form that is not part of the normal visa application. Those who are already in India on a tourist visa may be able to apply for permits at the FRRO. Normally, FRROs issue these permits only for groups of 4 or more foreigners. Some tour operators in India also provide help to get such permits as part of their tour packages. List of Restricted Areas Areas currently included in the restricted area list are: 1. States of Assam. 2. Meghalaya. 3. Tripura. 4. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 5. Certain bordering areas in the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. 6. Areas lying on the western side of National Highway # 15 from Ganganagar to Sanchore in Rajasthan.
