school in India for your child

One of the questions that concern NRI parents, who are contemplating a move to India, is schooling of their children. When it comes to schools, India has some great schools. Children, who move abroad with their parents, quite often do very well in western schools, as the schooling level in India is quite good. Most NRI parents seeking admissions for their children probably wonder about the syllabuses of Indian schools and the similarity if any with western schools. Many schools in India now have adopted syllabuses that conform to internationally acceptable standards. Schools in India are either municipal schools that are affiliated with the state government or private schools. Regardless of whether they are municipal or private schools, each school is affiliated with one of the following: 1. State Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board 2. Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) 3. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) boards. 4. International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) 5. International Baccalaureate (IB) Usually, a child in India, before joining the first standard, would attend a nursery school, pre- primary school or as some sort of Montessori school for about three years. The actual schooling would start at age five.

Stages of School Education in India

Briefly the stages of education in India consist of: • The Primary Stage consists of Classes I-V, i.e., of five year duration. • The next stage of education can be characterized as the 'Middle Stage'. This would compromise of children studying in class six to eight. • Next is the 'Secondary Stage' which leads up to grade nine and finally the board examinations for grade ten and eleven. • Following completion of their secondary school education, students head to college. Typically in India, high school is considered to be grade 10 and Intermediate is grade 12. One may periodically hear 10 plus 2.
