A brief description of each syllabus taught in schools
Parents trying to select a school in India may have to decide which school syllabus they want their child to follow. This way they can eliminate schools that do not follow the syllabus they desire. Here is a brief description of each syllabus.Secondary School Certificate (SSC)
This is provided by various Indian states such as, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Goa. SSC is quite popular in the state of Maharashtra. The syllabus would depend on the state where the school is located. Normally the state syllabuses are considered to be easier than the other syllabuses in India such as CBSE and ICSE. Some parents, in an effort to help their children get a higher mark in high school, switch them to the State syllabus from ICSE/CBSE.Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
They prepare the syllabus from KG to Class 12 for schools affiliated to them and have same syllabus throughout India. Their exams are also conducted at the same time all over India. CBSE has a national curriculum; this helps parents who move to different parts of India due to transfers etc. Their children will follow the same syllabus if they join another CBSE affiliated school, regardless of the city or state they move to within India. The majority of Indian competitive examinations such as, the All Indian Pre-Medical /Pre-Dental exams are based on CBSE syllabus.Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)
The ICSE board was formed in India in 1986. Many educational institutes follow their curriculum. Students prepare for All India Secondary School Examination for class 10 and the All India Senior Examination for class 12. ICSE is Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, while the syllabus may have an international touch; it is primarily used in India.International General Certificate Sec. Ed. (IGCSE)
Is a globally recognized qualification, The IGCSE curriculum has worldwide acceptance and credibility. It is recognized by colleges and universities in the commonwealth countries. Schools in India with an international outlook, normally offer IGSCE. IGCSE is a two-year programme starting at the Class 9 level. Students, who have done their early schooling from any other board, can join the IGCSE programme up to the Class 9 level. A student who has passed IGCSE is eligible for any +2 level qualifications, like Class 12 CBSE/ ICSE or any international pre-university programme, like the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), Advanced Placement Diploma (US), and A/AS Level & Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) UK.International Baccalaureate (IB)
The IB programme was founded in 1968 by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. IB Diploma is recognized by schools and colleges at an international level. There are three programs for students aged 3 to 19. 1. The Primary Years Program (Kindergarten to Class 5). 2. The Middle Years Program (Class 6 to Class 10). 3. The Diploma Program (Class 11 to Class 12). Schools recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization and offering the IB curriculum are known as IB World Schools. There are several schools in India that offer IB Diploma such as, American Embassy School, New Delhi and Canadian International School in Bangalore, Karnataka.
