Q.765 NRI Taxation in India on self occupied property . . .
Question: Good day.
I have been working in Libya for past more than 30 years and built a house in Urban Estate Karnal Haryana. My family has moved
to India and has been residing in this house whereas I am still working in Libya. I would like to ask you whether I am liable to be
taxed on this self-occupied property ?
An early reply will be much appreciated.
With regards.
Nathaniel Luke.
Answer: Generally a house in India whether self occupied, left vacant or rented would be subject to taxes applicable
to home owners such as property tax, society charges etc. As a non-resident, any taxes derived from sources in India
would be liable to tax.
If your family is living in the house you built, has no source of income in India other than money you send from your
work abroad. They are not liable to pay tax on funds they receive from abroad.
