Q.779 How to renew Indian driving license when living in Australia
Question: Hello,
I am Joseph Pauly living in Australia for the past 2.5 years. My driving licence expired on the 10th May 2015 and I sent an online
application to the Kerala Motor Vehicles department and paid the fees for licence renewal.
I have not heard back from them and I urgently need to have my licence renewed as I have to drive in Australia.
Kindly advice me how to go about this situation.
Regards
Joseph Pauly
Answer: Not sure on which website you applied for the renewal of your Kerala driving license. My understanding is that
to renew your driving license using online facility the procedure is:
When on the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department webpage:
•
Select from the drop down menu the RTO office applicable to you
•
Enter your current driver license number
•
Enter date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)
On submitting the above information, your driver license as on record is displayed. If information shown is correct you
can click the ‘Next Button’ and an application number is displayed for your submission.
I believe the applicant is then required to print the forms/application number and submit to the concerned RTO office:
•
The printed forms
•
Original license that is being renewed
•
Attested copies of documents for verifying proof of address and date of birth
•
The required fee for renewal or receipt of fee if paid online
When applying for renewal having the same local address as shown on the previous license helps. Kerala RTO I doubt
will entertain driving license renewals for addresses in Australia.
Australian driving license
I hope you are aware that Australian residents are generally required to obtain a state driving license within 3 months of
taking residence in the state. Their overseas driving license can only be legally used while they wait for their Australian
driving license.
After living in Australia for 2.5 years perhaps you should consider getting a Australian drivers license!
