Q.800 PR Card for Canadian born child of Indian Parents

Question: Both my husband and I are permanent residents of Canada. We are not planning to take Canadian citizenship as we trying to keep our Indian citizenship. I am pregnant and I understand that we can get an Indian passport from the consulate . Is it possible to get a PR card for my new born so she/he can hold Indian passport and stay in Canada. My daughter is also a PR but she was born in India. The purpose to keep the same was to avoid travelling confusions. And when they reach they can decide if they wish to keep their canadian citizenship. Thank You Chilie Answer: Since both parents hold PR cards and are hence legal residents of Canada, your baby will be considered to be a Canadian citizen. Getting a PR card for your new born child would not be possible as Canadian citizens do not require and are not issued PR cards. Suggestions: Since the child will be considered a Canadian citizen by birth your baby will not require a PR card to live in Canada. After baby is born use the Newborn Registration Service to complete your child's Birth Registration, Birth certificate and social insurance number. Normally you should get this within 15 days of applying. Do not apply for a Canadian passport as this will disqualify your baby from applying for an Indian passport. Traveling to India will not be a problem as your child will have Indian passport. However, return to Canada may not be that easy. Make sure to take your child’s Canadian birth documents when traveling out of Canada. As your child will not have a PR card or a Canadian passport. You will have to get a entry document either from the Canadian consulate in India or perhaps from within Canada before you leave.
