Question: Dear sirs My son-in-law Krishnaswamy is a US citizen by naturalisation, and he has OCI/ PIO card. He wants me to get information regarding application procedure for getting a licence in India, since he will need it as he is planning to get a job and work in India for some years due to family circumstances. I approached the RTO near my residence in Koramangala, Bengaluru. He says that a life insurance policy is required for applying for driving licence. I would like to know whether this is the CORRECT rule, and whether there is an alternative for insurance policy which my son in law does not have yet. By the way, I did search your WEBSITE NRI iNFORMATION but this specific question seems to be not answered, as far as I can see.I request you to let me know the correct position regarding the question I have stated, so that I can continue my efforts to help my son in law with a final answer for applying for the Driving licence in India. A large majority of Indian drivers have no life insurance. There appears to be a misunderstanding perhaps of what you have been told. No life insurance is required by those applying for driving license. When some one applies for a driving license in India, they are required to fill the application form and present documents to confirm their identity and address to the transport office (RTO). In the state of Karnataka, the following documents are accepted as proof of residence for those applying for driving license. 1. Ration Card with Affidavit Or 2. Voter's Identity Card Or 3. Certified Copy of Voter List Or 4. Life Insurance Policy at least six months old with latest receipt Or 5. Valid Passport Or 6. Employer's Certificate in case of Central Government /State Government /Local Bodies supported by attested copy of Identity Card. Any ONE of the above is required. As you can see #4 is a life insurance policy. This is only as proof of address and is not compulsory, any of the other documents can be used.
