Q.845 Make Train Reservations in India from abroad without local mobile

Question: Hi I live in Australia and travel to India often. However, if i have to travel within India by train I am unable to book from Australia before arriving in India. This is because IRCTC does not allow overseas mobile numbers for registration. Trave sites like makemytrip.com or yatra.com also do not allow booking from overseas for the same reason I saw a news item recently that the Railway Ministry is going to allow this to happen. Do you have any knowledge of a change of such rule? Alternately, what is the best way to book (without asking family members in India to help). Regards Kumar Gopalan [February 08, 2016] Answer: There is a way to make train reservations in India from abroad even if you do not have a local Indian mobile phone number. Step by step procedure on how to make train reservations in India from abroad by foreigners who do not have a local Indian mobile number is mentioned on a website, Travel India Smart in an article named: How to Buy train tickets without local mobile phone - Making reservations on trains in India from abroad - Step by step instructions for foreigners. How to pay for train reservations in India from abroad

Railway train reservations from abroad by NRIs who do not have a local Indian credit card is possible if the NRI trying to make the railway reservation has a bank account in India. Railway train tickets in India can be reserved on-line and payment made using a bank account in India. Most NRIs these days have an NRO or NRE account and they can easily use any of these accounts to pay for their train ticket reservations in India. They should have on-line banking setup to use this payment feature. Payments made by American Express Cards have been accepted in the past. I think this is the only foreign credit card that seems to work for Indian railway reservations.
